A baby shower invitation like this one calls people to a house in the early afternoon, when lunch is on the table and the blue and white things have been out since morning. Guests come in through the kitchen, set a wrapped box on the gift table, and sit where there is room. The food is real food: sandwiches, a salad, iced tea, cake afterward. Nobody is rushed.

Then the gifts get opened one at a time, and the room passes around folded sleepers, a hooded towel, a soft blanket someone's mother made. The sailboat that sat on the table all afternoon goes into the box with everything else and ends up on a shelf in the nursery. The parents-to-be leave with a car full of small clothes and a clearer idea of what they still need.

What to actually tell people

Serve lunch, then cake An early afternoon start means people arrive hungry. Put out something sturdy before the cake so guests are not holding a plate of frosting at one o'clock.
Let the sailboat be the centerpiece One small wooden boat on a gingham runner is enough for the whole table. It costs little, it photographs well, and it goes straight onto the nursery shelf afterward.
Ask for a book in place of a card Write the request in the message when you send the invitation. The shelf fills up with board books instead of envelopes, and each one gets a name written inside the cover.
Give one person the notepad Pick someone to write down every gift and who brought it while the boxes are being opened. Hand the list to the parents-to-be before they load the car.
