This baby shower invitation sets out a lilac satin afternoon with one idea running through it: the bow. Ivory ribbon on the chairbacks, on the napkins, around the cake stand, and in the hair of the three-year-old who came with her mother. The room stays in lilac and ivory, and nothing cartoonish gets in.

Tea is served at one. Guests take a cup, work through the sandwiches and scones on the tiered stands, and sit while the mother-to-be opens boxes of small folded clothes. The ribbon from the gifts collects in a bowl on the side table. People stay about three hours, and the last of the lemon curd goes home with whoever asks.

What to actually tell people

  • Buy more ribbon than the plan calls for Double-faced ivory satin, an inch and a half wide, ties well and holds a shape. One long spool covers chairbacks, napkins and the cake stand with some left for the gift table.
  • Pour within fifteen minutes of the start High tea at one means the first cup goes out while people are still standing. Have the pots filled and the milk and lemon already on the table so nobody waits for the kettle.
  • Count one tiered stand for every six guests Three crustless sandwiches and two scones per person is about right, with lemon curd and clotted cream in small bowls. Put a pitcher of iced tea beside the hot pots for anyone who wants it.
  • Set out a bowl for the gift ribbon Ask one person to collect the ribbon as the boxes are opened. It ties onto a nursery hanger afterward, and it keeps the floor clear while she is still unwrapping.
