Lavender, daisies and yellow stems stand in jam jars down the length of the bench, and the scones and lemonade go at the near end, under cloths.

The gifts line the shelf above the bench, out of the dirt. People pot up seedlings in small terracotta pots and write the baby's name on wooden labels, and the pots go home on somebody's windowsill until spring. The mother-to-be sits where the light comes in through the shed door and opens cards with soil still on her hands. Everyone leaves with a jar of flowers.

What to actually tell people

  • Mean the garden shoes line Say it on the invitation and keep a basket of flat shoes by the door for anyone who reads it after they have already dressed.
  • Cut the stems that morning Lavender, daisies and anything yellow, cut short and put straight into jam jars along the potting bench. Fill more jars than you need, and let guests carry one home at the end.
  • Put a potting station at one end Terracotta pots, a bag of soil, a scoop and seed packets, with wooden labels and a pencil. Each guest plants one for the nursery windowsill and writes the baby's name on the label.
  • Plan for no kitchen A shed has a tap and nowhere to wash up. Bring the scones and berries out in covered trays, pour from a drinks dispenser, and hang a towel by the tap for hands that have been in the soil.
