This baby shower invitation sets up a morning at home rather than an afternoon with games. A knotted macrame arch hangs on the wall above the gift table, terracotta and dusty blue cord strung with wooden beads, tassels resting against the plaster. Guests come in out of the cold air, put their coats on the bed, and stand in the kitchen with mugs while the table fills with soft parcels: muslin wraps, a wool blanket, a knitted hat the size of a grapefruit.

The hours stay unhurried. Someone puts on a record, the parents-to-be open a few things on the sofa, and the rest of the gifts wait in the corner to be carried out to the car. Before everyone leaves, the arch comes down off the wall and goes into the nursery, where it hangs above the crib with the stitched moon and star beside it.

What to actually tell people

Hang the arch before anyone arrives Put the macrame piece on the wall above the gift table so it anchors the room and the photographs. It belongs in the nursery afterward, so use a hook that comes out cleanly.
Set out cord and wooden beads Cut arm-length strands of terracotta, cream and dusty blue cord and leave a bowl of beads beside them. Guests knot one strand each onto a wooden dowel, and the finished piece hangs by the changing table.
One playlist, kept under the conversation Acoustic or instrumental, started before the first knock and left alone. Low music does the work that a round of games usually does, and nobody has to raise their voice across the sofa.
Feed people a morning, not a lunch A pot of coffee, a pot of tea, a loaf cake cut thick and a bowl of cut fruit is enough. Two hours is the right length, and it leaves the rest of the day open for the parents-to-be.
