A birthday invitation for a night run like a venue booking. Guests get a laminate at the door with their name on it, and the room is arranged around one microphone. There is a queue on the fridge, a speaker borrowed from someone's brother, and lyrics on the television with the subtitles lagging half a line behind. The birthday guest sings first, because the first song is the hardest and it is her night.

By the second hour the queue has stopped being a queue. Duets form without warning. Somebody attempts a key she cannot reach and is applauded for it anyway. The earplugs sit in a bowl by the door and three people take them seriously. Nobody has removed their pass, including the two guests who left at ten and came back.

What to actually tell people

  • Hand out the passes at the door Write each name on the laminate before anyone arrives. It settles who is next on the microphone without anyone having to ask.
  • Keep a written queue A list on the fridge, one song each before anybody gets a second. The people who sing last are the ones who need the room to be loud first.
  • Test the speaker while the room is empty Find the extension cord, pair the phone, and play the loudest track on the list once. Set the ceiling then, not at ten when the neighbors are awake.
  • Decide the encore in advance Pick the final song and the hour it happens, and tell one person other than yourself. A night like this does not end on its own.
