Baby shower invitation

Baby in Bloom

The peonies are cut that morning and the hats stay on all afternoon.

Blush linen card embroidered with pink peonies, rosebuds and sage leaves in the top-left and bottom-right corners, a stitched ivory pearl border, and script reading Baby in Bloom with the date and venue below.

This baby shower invitation sets the party under glass: a greenhouse at midday, long tables down the middle, peonies in jam jars at intervals, and tea poured at two. Guests come in hats because the invitation asked for them. The light comes through the roof and lands on the linen, and the room is warm enough that someone props the door open with a watering can.

The food is small and sits on a tiered stand. The gifts are opened slowly, between cups, with the mother-to-be in the chair at the head of the table and someone writing down who gave what. Grandmothers and aunts and friends from work sit together, which does not happen often. Afterwards the jars of peonies go home with whoever wants them.

What to actually tell people

  • Mean it about the hats If the invitation says hats welcome, keep a basket of three or four spares by the door so the guests who came bare-headed are not the only ones. Nobody needs to buy anything.
  • A greenhouse gets hot by two Check the vents and the shade the week before, and put a pitcher of iced tea on the table alongside the pot. Set chairs on the flagstones rather than the gravel so they sit level.
  • Buy the peonies early Order them four or five days ahead and let them open at room temperature in buckets of water. Split them into small jars down the table so they do not block anyone's view.
  • Leave a linen square at each place Set out plain linen squares and a pencil, and ask each guest to sign or draw one. They stitch over the lines later and the squares become a blanket for the cot.
