Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

A baby shower invitation like this one sets up a late-morning gathering under a hot-air balloon. Somebody hangs the balloon first, usually from a tree branch or a ceiling hook over the gift table, and everything else is arranged beneath it. The table runs navy, white and sky blue: a cake with plain white frosting, a bowl of blueberries, coffee for the people who came straight from the drive.

Guests arrive with soft packages in blue paper and set them down under the balloon. The basket collects cards and folded notes. The parents open gifts with the balloon turning slowly overhead, and the last half hour is people standing around the table finishing the cake and talking about the nursery.

What to actually tell people

  • Hang the balloon before anything else The hot-air balloon is the whole room, so give it a real anchor: a tree limb, a beam, a ceiling hook rated for a few pounds. Hang it low enough to read and high enough to walk under.
  • Use the wicker basket for cards A small basket hung under the balloon, or set on the gift table beside it, gives guests somewhere to put envelopes and written notes for the baby. It keeps the cards in one place when the gifts start stacking up.
  • Plan for wind if you are outside An open field or a backyard will move a paper balloon all morning. Weight the tablecloth corners, tie the balloon at two points rather than one, and keep the cake in shade.
  • Keep the palette to three colors Navy, white and sky blue across the plates, ribbon and wrapping makes a small table look finished. Ask guests to wrap in blue paper if you want the gift pile to hold together in photographs.
