Baby shower invitation

Tiny Dancer

Satin pointe shoes lie on blush satin with their ribbons trailing, and the gifts go in a row along the mirror.

Blush satin background with ivory pointe shoes and rhinestone ribbons at the top. Deep mauve script reads Tiny Dancer above A shower in honor of BABY GIRL FONTAINE, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This baby shower invitation sets the afternoon in a ballet studio, with the barre along one wall and the mirrors running the full length of the room. Guests leave their shoes at the door, cross the floor in socks or flats, and find chairs set in a loose half circle where the class would normally line up. Ribbon is tied along the barre. Gift bags sit underneath it in a row.

The food is pale and small: petits fours, raspberry lemonade, shortbread on a tray that travels from hand to hand because there is no dining table. The mother-to-be opens cards first, then the folded sleepers and the tiny soft slippers that everyone seems to have bought. Someone takes a photograph in the mirror with the whole room in it. Older cousins try first position by the barre before the chairs go back against the wall.

What to actually tell people

  • Ask about the floor before you book Most studios do not allow street shoes on a marley or sprung floor. Put a basket of clean socks by the door and say so on the invitation, so nobody arrives in heels they cannot wear inside.
  • Plan for a room with no kitchen A barre room usually has a sink and nothing else. Bring a folding table, a drinks dispenser, your own ice, and a bag for everything that has to leave with you at the end of the hour.
  • Use the barre and leave the mirrors clear Tie blush ribbon along the barre and line the gifts beneath it. Keep one stretch of mirror free, because that is where the photographs of the whole room get taken.
  • Give her one pair of slippers to keep Set out a pair of soft ivory baby ballet slippers and a card tied to the ribbons for each guest to write a line on. They go home in the box and onto the nursery shelf.
