Whale, Hello There
A knitted whale no bigger than a palm sits on the gift table all morning.
This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.
Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.
What the Final Touch isA baby shower invitation in cable knit and navy points to a late morning near the water, with the windows open and the kettle on. Guests come in by eleven, leave their jackets on a bench by the door, and find a table set in white and powder blue. Someone has brought a blanket she has been knitting since spring, and it gets passed along the sofa so everybody can feel the weight of it.
The food is simple and warm: cups of chowder, lemon bars, fruit on a white platter. The gifts are soft and small, folded sleepers and sweaters with room to grow. People trade sea puns across the table without being asked twice, the parents-to-be read the cards out loud, and the knitted whale goes home in the box with the rest to sit on a nursery shelf.

What to actually tell people
- Ask the knitters early If two or three people in the family knit, give them six weeks and a color. A blanket of squares in navy, white and powder blue can be stitched together the week before and handed over at the shower.
- Put the puns on paper Set out plain cards and pens near the snacks and ask each guest to write one line for the baby. You will have a stack to read aloud while the gifts are opened, and the parents keep them afterward.
- Size the knitwear up Newborn sweaters fit for about a month. Tell guests who are making something to aim for six to twelve months, and to note the size on the tag so the parents know when to pull it out.
- Plan for a room near the water A harbor house in July is bright and breezy. Weigh down the napkins and cards, keep the tables out of the wind off the door, and have a few extra chairs in the shade for anyone who wants to sit.
