A birthday invitation for a hoedown held in a front yard before noon, for a guest of honour who is three. Hay bales get dragged into a loose ring and covered with quilts, because hay goes through leggings. The stick horses lean against the porch rail in a row. Lemonade is in mason jars on a folding table, coffee is in a thermos beside it, and the parents stand near the thermos for most of the morning.

There is one song with a line dance and it lasts about ninety seconds before the formation collapses. Someone is wearing a fringe vest over pyjamas. The cake comes out early, because the whole thing has to be over by the time the nap starts, and it is.

What to actually tell people

Corral the stick horses Set them against the porch rail in a single row and count them out loud when guests arrive. Loose horses in a yard of three-year-olds become a tripping hazard within ten minutes.
Quilt the hay bales Bare straw goes straight through leggings and the complaints start fast. Old quilts or a canvas drop cloth over each bale solves it, and they roll up afterwards.
Bandanas at the gate Keep a basket of bandanas and toddler fringe vests by the front path and hand them out as people come in. Write initials on the tags, because every vest looks identical by the time people leave.
End it before the nap Cake early, presents later or not at all, and a clear finish well before one. A morning hoedown that runs long ends with a three-year-old face down on a hay bale.
