Wedding invitation

Eleanor & Thomas

Ushers walk each guest to a seat, and the ceremony begins on the hour.

Wedding invitation: Cream letterpress card with a thin gold border. A burgundy laurel crest with intertwined E and T sits above the large spaced names ELEANOR and THOMAS, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A wedding invitation in this register sets up a formal evening in an old hall. Guests arrive before the hour, find their names on the escort cards laid out by the door, and are walked to their seats. The ceremony is short and begins when it says it will. Afterwards the couple stands at the top of the room and greets people one at a time while the glasses are poured.

Dinner is sat down at long tables, with place cards and a joined monogram printed on the napkins and the menu. Toasts come between courses, so nobody is holding a cold plate. The dress is black tie optional, which fills the room with dark suits, tuxedos and long dresses. The first dance happens once the tables are cleared, and the band plays until the hall's hours run out.

What to actually tell people

  • Spell out black tie optional Most guests want a sentence they can act on. Say that a tuxedo or a dark suit both work, and that long or midi dresses are both at home in the room.
  • Fix the monogram order and keep it Decide now which initial sits left in the crest, then use that same order on the napkins, the menus, the cake and the dance floor. Changing it halfway through means reprinting something.
  • Lay out escort cards alphabetically A table by the door with cards in alphabetical order by last name moves a hundred guests in a few minutes. Keep the framed seating chart beside it for anyone who wants to see the whole room.
  • Time the receiving line A greeting line after the ceremony runs about a minute a guest, which is an hour for sixty people. If the cocktail hour is shorter than that, greet guests table by table during dinner instead.
