Wedding invitation

Olivia & James

Sage and olive run the length of the table, and the toasts are made before dessert.

Wedding invitation: Ivory deckled-edge card with a translucent vellum band across the top, pale sage olive sprigs either side of a terracotta wax seal stamped OJ, and terracotta script names Olivia and James.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This wedding invitation goes out for an afternoon at a house with an orchard behind it. Guests park on gravel and walk in under the trees, chairs are set out in rows on grass that has been mown twice that week, and the vows are said in full daylight, while the walls are still holding the warmth. There is no aisle runner. There is a path, a ribbon on the last two chairs, and a pitcher of water for anyone who needs it.

Afterwards the tables go long and the platters go down the middle: bread, roast, bowls of greens, cut olive and sage between the candles. Toasts happen while people are still eating, so nobody has to be found again. The dancing starts outside once the plates are cleared, and the last of it happens under string lights, with a cardigan over most of the dresses.

What to actually tell people

  • Set the ceremony by the light, not the clock Ask the venue what time the sun drops behind the ridge or the tree line at that address, in that month. Start the vows at least an hour before it, so the ceremony and the photographs happen in warm light.
  • Cut the olive and sage the morning before Both hold up in dry heat far better than cut flowers, and both smell like the house. Keep the stems in buckets of water overnight, then lay them down the center of the tables an hour before guests arrive.
  • Decide how the long tables are served Family-style platters need room between the greenery and the candles, and someone at each end to start them moving. Tell the kitchen how many platters per table, and keep the center line low enough to see across.
  • Plan for the temperature drop after dark An outdoor dinner that starts warm will be cold by the dancing. Set a basket of blankets or shawls near the door, and light the gravel path with lanterns or staked lights so nobody crosses it in heels in the dark.
