Game Night House Rules Apply

Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

A game night invitation for a house that runs its evening as a tournament. Pairings go up on the fridge before anyone arrives. Boards are set on the table, clocks go between the players, and the first round starts on the hour whether the last guest is out of their coat or not. Captured pieces get lined up neatly along the edge of the board, because that is how it is done here.

The room is quieter than most parties, which guests find unnerving for about ten minutes and then stop noticing. It turns in the second round, when somebody lets go of a knight and reconsiders. The ruling comes from one chair, it comes quickly, and the board is reset. By the final the rest of the group has pulled their chairs around a single table, and nobody is looking at their phone.

What to actually tell people

  • Post the bracket where people walk past it A single sheet on the fridge settles who plays whom and in what order. It also stops four separate conversations about seeding before the first move.
  • Decide the clock question early Five minutes a side keeps the night moving, fifteen lets people actually think. Say which one you are using when you send the invitation, not when the first game stalls.
  • Name the arbiter out loud One person rules on touch-move, illegal positions and anything else that comes up. Appointing them before the first game is the difference between a ruling and an argument.
  • Keep food off the playing table Set the bowls and glasses on a side table or the counter. Felt holds a salt ring, and a knocked drink ends a game nobody wants to replay.
