See the collectionThis is a baby shower invitation for a gathering that begins after dinner, when the light has gone and the lamps are already on. Guests come in from the dark, put their coats somewhere, and find a table set with small plates: a lemon tart cut into squares, a bowl of berries, something with cream, a pot of decaf and a kettle for tea. Nobody is managing a main course. There is time to sit down.
The gifts lean toward the night: sleep sacks, swaddles, a dimmable nightlight, the sound machine someone swears by. The mother opens them on a sofa with a lamp behind her, and the room stays low and warm while she does. By nine the plates are stacked, the last of the tart is wrapped for her to take home, and people walk out under whatever the sky is doing.

What to actually tell people
- Say that dinner is on their own Put dessert at dusk on the invitation and name two or three of the desserts, so guests eat first and arrive ready for cake.
- Light the room in pieces Turn the overhead light off and use lamps, plus candles on the side tables. Keep one bright spot over the dessert table so people can see what they are cutting into.
- Point the registry at the night shift Sleep sacks, swaddles, blackout curtains, a dimmable nightlight and a sound machine are the gifts that get used at three in the morning. List sizes beyond newborn, since the nights do not stop at eight weeks.
- Plan for people arriving and leaving in the dark Leave the porch light on, mark the walk if it is uneven, and say in advance that you will finish by nine. A pregnant guest of honor at the end of an evening will be grateful for a clear end time.
