Baby shower invitation

Sage Advice

Every casserole arrives labeled with a date on the lid and one line of advice on a card.

Baby shower invitation: Sage wool card with stitched white border and pearl corners. Embroidered branch with gold key above script SAGE ADVICE, BABY CALLOWAY, a linen date patch, a sprig and a wooden spoon.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This baby shower invitation sets up a late morning in a kitchen that smells like thyme and warm butter. Guests come in with a dish in a foil pan, write the date on the tape across the lid, and slide it onto the freezer shelf that was cleared out the night before. The counter holds soup, bread, a bowl of cut herbs, and a stack of linen cards with a pen beside them.

Everyone writes one line they wish someone had told them in the first month. The sister who has done it twice, the aunt who raised four, the neighbor who brings dinner without asking. The cards are read out over cake, tied with ribbon, and kept. The gifts lean practical: swaddles, a good wooden spoon, a recipe copied out by hand. Guests are home by early afternoon, and the parents have two weeks of dinners in the freezer.

What to actually tell people

  • Put the advice cards by the door Set out plain linen or heavy card stock and green pens where guests take their coats off, so writing happens before the room fills up. One line each is plenty, and the stack is easier to read aloud than a passed book.
  • Ask for foil pans and a label Tell guests in advance: a disposable pan, masking tape on the lid, the dish name, the date and the oven temperature written out. Clear a freezer shelf the night before so nothing has to be rearranged while people are standing in the kitchen.
  • Start a recipe box for the new parents Leave a box of index cards on the table and ask each guest to copy out one weeknight meal they can make without looking. Grandmothers tend to write the ones that get used most.
  • Send the herbs home Small pots of thyme and sage on the counter by the door are easy to grow and cost very little. A wooden spoon tied to each pot with ribbon makes it a gift rather than a plant that gets left behind.
