This baby shower invitation sets up a little explorer party: khaki and forest green, shade over the long table, and a giraffe watching the whole afternoon. Guests arrive and clip a tag with their name to their bag. Drinks go out in enamel mugs, the food is easy to carry on one plate, and the gifts stack up at one end of the table in brown paper and twine.

The hours are unhurried. Someone passes the binoculars around to the children, who take them out to the edge of the grass and report back. The parents open the soft parcels first, then the ones with weight to them, and the growth chart gets unrolled and held up against the wall to see how tall it really is. People stay later than they planned, because there is shade and there is more tea.

What to actually tell people

  • Use luggage tags for names and gifts Buy a box of blank leather or kraft luggage tags and a dark green pen. Guests write their own name at the door, and the same tags go on the gifts so the thank you notes write themselves later.
  • Give the giraffe growth chart a job A tall fabric or wooden growth chart makes a good group gift and a good activity. Set it on the table with a pen and ask each guest to sign near the height they think the child will reach first.
  • Keep the binoculars by the door One or two real pairs are enough for the children who come. Point them at something specific, a bird feeder, a pond, the far fence, so the walk has a destination and ends back at the table.
  • Plan for an afternoon in the shade Enamel mugs, a drink dispenser with iced tea and one with water, trail mix in small bowls, and fruit that does not wilt. If the venue is a lodge, a park shelter or a yard, check where the sun lands at the hour you have chosen.
