Final Touch

This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.

Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.

What the Final Touch is

This baby shower invitation sets the afternoon in a corner diner at noon. Guests take the back booths, order burgers and fries and a round of milkshakes, and pass the ultrasound photo down the table while the plates are cleared. There is no head table and no program. The parents-to-be sit in the middle so everyone can hear them.

The gifts are soft and practical: a denim jacket in twelve months, overalls, a pack of plain white onesies, a pair of boots that will not fit until spring. Someone brings a crate to carry it all out to the car. Most people are wearing denim, because the invitation asked them to, and the photographs at the end look like one family in one fabric.

What to actually tell people

  • Book the booths, not a hall Call the diner and ask for the back section at an off-peak hour, with one check and a short menu: burgers, fries, milkshakes. Most places will hold six booths on a weekend afternoon if you ask two weeks out.
  • Put denim in the dress code One line on the invitation is enough: wear denim. Jackets, shirts, overalls, anything. The room holds together without a single balloon or garland.
  • Set up a patch table Buy a box of iron-on red star patches and a few plain white onesies, and let guests press one on at the end booth. A travel iron and a dish towel are all it takes, and the parents go home with a stack of them.
  • Ask for the bigger sizes Say on the registry note that six to twelve month clothes are welcome, since newborn sizes arrive from everyone. A denim jacket in twelve months gets worn next spring, in actual photographs.
