Baby shower invitation

Locally Grown

Seedlings in paper pots go home with the guests, one from the crate by the door.

Baby shower invitation: Kraft card with a sage linen border and copper beads. An embroidered crate of seedlings above green stitched script reading Locally Grown, with BABY FOSTER, a linen date tag, a carrot and a radish.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

Food goes out early: muffins split and buttered, a bowl of berries, cut melon, cold cider in glass bottles. The gift table is a plank laid over two crates, and the flowers are whatever was cut that morning, standing in jars with the stems still long.

Guests come in from the lot with cardigans over their arms and find a seat on a bench or a folding chair. The mother to be opens small things: cotton sleepers, a wooden rattle, a stack of cloths. Somebody reads the care instructions off a seedling pot out loud. By noon the crates are repacked, the jars are rinsed in the sink at the back, and everyone leaves with something that needs water.

What to actually tell people

  • Borrow the crates Ask the market or a farm stand for a dozen empty wooden crates the week before. Stacked two high they become the gift table, the drinks stand and the risers for the food.
  • Plant the favors early Basil, cherry tomato or marigold starts need two to three weeks in their paper pots to root well enough to travel. Set them in a shallow tray by the door so guests can carry them out in one hand.
  • Write it all on tags Buy a roll of kraft produce tags and a ball of twine. Tie one to every dish with the name on it, one to the drinks jug, and one to the basket where guests leave their notes for the nursery shelf.
  • Plan for a shed, not a dining room Put out a stack of chairs with real backs for anyone who will be sitting a while, and keep the food on the shaded side.
