Baby shower invitation

A rhyme is read aloud before each gift is opened, and tea follows in the reading room.

Guests arrive with storybooks instead of bows, and each one takes a turn reading a nursery rhyme aloud. The old ones are short, so the whole circle gets through in under half an hour.

After the reading, the tea is poured and the sandwiches and scones come out. Gifts are opened slowly, with the books stacked separately so the parents can see what the shelf will hold. People write their names and a line of verse on the inside covers before they leave, and the stack goes home to the nursery that evening.

Rhymes aloud. Tea after.

What to actually tell people

  • Assign the rhymes in advance Write one nursery rhyme on a card for each guest and set the cards on the chairs before anyone arrives. Nobody has to think of one on the spot, and no rhyme gets read twice.
  • Ask for a book instead of a card Put the request in the invitation: a storybook, inscribed on the inside cover. Leave a pen on the side table so guests can sign before the reading begins.
  • Pass something to mark the turn A small object handed from reader to reader keeps the circle moving without anyone calling names. A wooden egg, a ribbon or a pressed feather all work.
  • Set the tea for after, not during Pour once the last rhyme is read, so cups and saucers are not moving while someone is reading. Scones, butter and one pot of strong tea are enough for twelve.
