Low & Slow
The brisket decides when dinner is, and it has not decided yet.
This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.
Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.
What the Final Touch isA dad's night out invitation built around a cook that starts before the sun: the pit is lit in the dark, the pepper tin is empty by sunrise, and the first guest does not turn up for another six hours. The yard smells like oak before anyone is awake to notice. One person owns the fire. Everybody else is a visitor to it.
Guests arrive at noon to a folding table, a cooler on the porch and a thermometer that gets more attention than any of them. The afternoon is slow on purpose: pickle chips, cold drinks, the same three stories, somebody asking every forty minutes whether it is close. Then the probe slides in clean, the wrap comes off, and the first slice goes down on the board in front of everyone. The talking stops for about a minute. It starts again once the ends are gone.

What to actually tell people
- Buy more wood than the math says Count the split oak you think twelve hours needs, then add half again. A hardware store run at ten in the morning costs you the bark.
- Put an arrival time on the card, not a dinner time Noon is when the porch opens. The brisket comes off when it comes off, and promising an hour you cannot keep is how a yard full of people turns restless.
- Fill the gap between arrival and slicing There are hours in there. Pickle chips, saltines, sliced onion and a cooler within reach of the chairs keeps everyone out of the kitchen and off the pit.
- Rest it longer than feels reasonable An hour wrapped in a dry cooler, minimum. Then slice against the grain on a board at the table, so the first cut happens in front of the people who waited for it.
