Dad's night out invitation

Showroom Preview

Folding chairs go in a half circle around the front bumper, and the hood stays up.

Dad's night out invitation: Black quilted leather card with a chrome laurel badge at top, chrome trim and a tire-tread strip down the left. Large silver SHOWROOM PREVIEW above a red host name, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

The door goes up. The shop light gets aimed at the quarter panel. Everyone walks a full lap before anyone sits down, and the owner narrates the lap whether or not he is asked to.

Nothing is driven anywhere. The walk-around takes most of an hour because every panel has a receipt attached to it, and somewhere after the second lap the conversation leaves the car entirely and lands on someone's water heater. That part is nobody's fault. Regardless, the hood stays up until the last chair is folded and carried back out to a trunk.

Bring your own chair.

Every line of the wording is an example, and yours to replace. The title is painted into the artwork. Type your own and it is drawn again with your words.

What to actually tell people

  • Clear a full lap Move the mower, the recycling and the bikes out the side door before anyone arrives. Guests need to walk all the way around the car without turning sideways.
  • Light it from the sides The single bulb in the ceiling flattens everything. Two work lights on stands, aimed low at the panels, show the paint the way you have been describing it.
  • Heat the concrete early A slab holds cold for hours. Run the heater well before the first car pulls up, and keep it pointed away from the chairs so nobody has to shout over it.
  • Count on two forgotten chairs The card says bring your own and two people will not. Keep a pair of folding chairs behind the bench, and keep drinks on the workbench rather than the fender.
