Dad's night out invitation

Title Fight

Four lawn chairs mark the corners, and the belt leaves with whichever cousin is standing.

Dad's night out invitation: Black canvas card edged in gold studs, a championship belt with a crown crest across the top, a red glove pin and white footprints. Gold capitals read TITLE FIGHT, with the date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A dad's night out invitation for the evening the back lawn becomes a ring. Two corners get chalked near the fence, four lawn chairs stand in for ropes, and the cooler at the edge holds ice before it holds anything else. The gloves are sixteen-ounce and arrived in a plastic bag from the sporting goods store. The two cousins have been talking about this since a cookout in June.

The bell is a phone timer, held by whoever is least invested in the outcome. The first round is long. The second round is ninety seconds of two grown men breathing. Then the belt goes over somebody's shoulder, the grill gets lit, and the man holding the ice pack explains what he would have done differently, at length, until dark.

What to actually tell people

  • Walk the lawn first Pace the ring out before anyone laces up: no sprinkler heads, no deck step, no patio edge inside the corners. Put the chairs down and move the hose somewhere else entirely.
  • Two-minute rounds Set two on a phone, hand it to one person standing outside the ring, and let his call on time stand without discussion.
  • Gear before guests Sixteen-ounce gloves, headgear, a mouthguard each and one roll of wraps per fighter. The ice goes in the cooler an hour before the first car pulls up, not after.
  • Settle custody of the belt Decide before the first round where it lives until next summer. A strip of tape on the back plate with the year and the winner's name ends the argument in advance.
