Dad's night out invitation

Summit Attempt

Boots get laced at the back door, and the summit is a folding chair in the yard.

Dad's night out invitation: Olive canvas card with brass grommets. Embossed contour lines rise to a brass disc at top left; embers glow up the right edge. SUMMIT ATTEMPT in pale capitals, with date and venue below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

This dad's night out invitation opens base camp at the fire ring at the top of the yard, and the ascent takes about ninety seconds. Everyone arrives in boots and a fleece. The wood is already split into two sizes and stacked within reach of the chairs. Headlamps come out of coat pockets and sit on the arm of a chair, unused, because the porch light reaches most of the way.

The first hour is the fire and the weather report nobody asked for. Somebody checks the wind, moves a chair one seat upwind, and is proven right within twenty minutes. Enamel mugs get refilled from a kettle set on the stones. Around the last log the conversation turns to the trip they keep saying they will actually take, with dates, and by then it is cold enough that everyone means it.

What to actually tell people

  • Lay the fire before the gate opens Split wood into kindling and two larger sizes and stack it within arm's reach of the chairs. Nobody should be walking to the woodpile in the dark halfway through the night.
  • Set the ring at the right distance Place the chairs about four feet off the fire, with one gap left open on the downwind side. That gap is where the smoke goes, and someone will still sit in it.
  • Keep something hot pouring A kettle on the stones and enamel mugs beat anything from the fridge once the temperature drops. Cider, coffee or broth: the point is that it stays warm in the hand.
  • Announce a turnaround time Say when the last log goes on, and put it on the fire when you said you would. Everyone leaves in better shape, and the fire is out before you go inside.
