This baby shower invitation sets the party for the evening, in a room with low light and a proper bar. Guests arrive after work, hand over gifts near the door, and go straight to a tray of chilled coupes. Everything poured is alcohol-free: grapefruit and tonic, olive brine and verjus, something bitter over a large piece of ice. The mother-to-be has the same drink as everyone else, in the same glass.

A garnish tray sits out all night with green olives, pearl onions, lemon peel and gold picks, and people build their own. The food is bar food: salted almonds, pimento cheese on toast, deviled eggs. There are no games. There is conversation, a round of toasts before anyone starts yawning, and gifts opened at a side table while the last glasses are still going out.

What to actually tell people

Set the garnish tray before anyone arrives Olives, pearl cocktail onions, lemon and orange peel, flaky salt and a jar of gold picks, all in one place. Guests will dress their own glass, and the tray keeps the bar from being one person's job all evening.
Chill the coupes Stack them in the freezer twenty minutes before the first guest, and plan on two per person. A mocktail served in a warm glass goes flat fast, and the coupe is most of the pleasure.
Check the bitters Standard cocktail bitters are alcohol-based, so buy the alcohol-free version or leave them out and lean on brine, citrus and tonic for the bite. Write two recipes on cards and prop them at the bar so people can pour without asking.
Feed people like it is dinner Six in the evening means guests come hungry. Salted nuts, olives, deviled eggs and something warm on toast will carry the night better than a cake table.
