Dad's night out invitation

Neat

The water dropper goes around the table, and one man refuses to use it.

Dad's night out invitation: Dark walnut boards in a brass border. Embroidered whiskey tumbler with a pearl ice ball above large cream letters reading NEAT. Flight board, oak sprig, bottle, jigger, linen napkin with date below.

Part of the TinselLux™ collection: invitations in stitched leather, tufted velvet, linen and satin.

The material is the card: linen with a visible weave, velvet with a nap, leather with its grain. It costs the same as every other invitation.

A dad's night out invitation for an evening measured in four pours: a wooden flight board, a brass jigger, a jug of room temperature water and a bowl of plain crackers nobody asked for. The glasses go down left to right. Someone brings a bottle from the shelf at home, still with the gift ribbon on the neck, and it goes at the end of the line where it will be judged last and hardest.

The first pour is quiet. By the third, there is a napkin covered in words like oak, toffee and barn, and two men are disagreeing about which of them said vanilla first. The one clear ice sphere gets passed between glasses like it is on loan. The night turns when the bottles come out from behind the bar and the cheapest one wins, and everybody has to sit with that for a while before anyone orders food.

What to actually tell people

  • Set the order before anyone sits down Lightest and lowest proof on the left, highest on the right. Once the fourth pour has been in the glass, nothing tasted after it will register properly.
  • Water on the table, not ice in the glass A small pitcher of room temperature water and one dropper or spoon per person. Keep the one large ice sphere for whoever decides they want a drink rather than a tasting.
  • Keep the labels covered until the end Pour in the kitchen, number the glasses on a strip of masking tape, and reveal the bottles only after everyone has ranked them. The ranking is more honest and the argument is better.
  • Feed people at the start, not the finish Bread, plain crackers and hard cheese before the first pour, with something hot arriving around the third. Four ounces of whiskey over two hours lands heavier than anyone plans for, so settle rides early.
