The bar makes one drink forty times and the conversation holds for the first hour without anybody sitting down.
Then the second round lands and the room settles. Someone claims the corner of the booth. The bags stop being guarded. By nine the heels are under the table and nobody retrieves them, and the rest of the night happens in stocking feet on a very good carpet.

What to actually tell people
- Say that dinner has already happened. The night runs on cocktails and whatever the bar puts in bowls.
- Ask for the banquette with a ledge. A kiss-lock bag will not hang on a hook and nobody is putting one on the floor. A long surface at elbow height keeps every bag in sight of its owner all evening.
- Open one tab and name one drink. Hand the card over at the start and give the bar a single cocktail to batch. It spares forty people a menu and spares you the arithmetic at the end.
- Plan for the shoes. The heels come off at some point. A spare pair of flats in the coat check and a car booked for a set hour settles both ends of that.
