This baby shower invitation is for a small afternoon at home: twelve people, a light lunch, and no games on the schedule. Guests arrive at the door and find the table already set, soup on the stove, sandwiches cut on the counter. The mother-to-be sits in a chair with arms, near the window, and she keeps that chair most of the afternoon. People come to her rather than the other way around.

Gifts stack on one small table: folded sleepers, a wool blanket, a beechwood teething ring still in its paper. They get opened slowly, or after most people have gone. The talk goes where it goes, to due dates and sleep and the name they have not told anyone. By three o'clock the bowls are in the sink, the chairs are back where they live, and the house is quiet again.

What to actually tell people

  • Count the chairs before the list Twelve is a number you can seat, feed and hear across a single room. Set out the chairs first, then invite exactly that many, and leave the list closed once it is full.
  • Serve a lunch that waits Soup, a board of sandwiches, something cut and covered in the fridge. Nothing that needs to come out of the oven at a set minute, so you can sit down when your guests do.
  • Put no games in writing Saying it on the invitation stops anyone arriving with a clothespin bag or a list of questions. People fill the time with each other, which is what the room is for.
  • Give the afternoon an end Name a start time and plan on about two hours. The mother-to-be should be able to lie down before dinner without having to be the one who ends it.
