Story Night
Six chapters are planned, and the third one gets read twice.
This design has the Final Touch: the wording is stamped, stitched or foiled to match the artwork, so the card reads as one finished piece.
Start from it and your wording is painted in the same way, exactly as you type it.
What the Final Touch isA birthday invitation for the sleepover where the reading is the main event. Sleeping bags go down in a ring on the living room floor, heads toward the middle. Every guest arrives with a pillow, a flashlight and one stuffed animal from home, and the stuffed animal is introduced by name before anyone takes off their shoes. The chapter books come out after dinner.
Lights go off at the stated hour. The flashlights come on about forty seconds later, aimed at the ceiling, and the reading continues from there. One guest falls asleep during the second chapter and is covered up without comment. Two are still whispering at eleven. In the morning everyone is at the table in pajamas, and the bears come to breakfast.

What to actually tell people
- Buy batteries you do not need Flashlights carry the whole night and at least two will arrive already dim. Keep a fresh pack of AAs in the kitchen drawer.
- Choose the stack in advance Three short chapter books beat one long one, because a sleepover audience changes its mind. Let the birthday kid pick the first and take requests after that.
- Lay out the floor before anyone arrives Decide where each sleeping bag goes yourself and say it once. Seven-year-olds negotiating positions at nine at night does not end.
- Label every bear Masking tape and a marker on the tag, done at the door. One stuffed animal is always left behind, and nobody can agree whose it is.
