Guests stitch their initials into a quilt square between the quiche and the cake.

The light comes in from one side of the room and nobody is in a hurry.

At the center of it is handwork. There is a hoop and sage thread at one end of the table, and guests stitch a letter or a small flower into a square that will be sewn into a quilt for the nursery. The gift table fills with soft parcels wrapped in tissue, and the cards stack beside them. An older relative usually brings something kept in a drawer for years: a christening gown, a pearl pin, a blanket finished by hand.

What to actually tell people

Set the brunch for a room, not a lawn Nothing that needs to come straight off a stove.
Prepare the quilt squares in advance Cut cream cotton squares, hoop a few of them, and set out sage and rose thread with blunt needles and a few threaded already. Write each guest's name in pencil on the back so you know whose square is whose when you sew them together.
Keep the table low and soft Short bud vases of roses let people see across the table, and a cream runner over a dusty rose cloth stops the room looking busy. Leave the center clear where the hoops and thread will end up.
Give the heirlooms a place to sit Ask the grandmothers and aunts to bring one thing they kept: a stitched blanket, a christening gown, a pearl pin. Lay them on a clean cloth near the gift table so they are looked at properly and go home with the right person.
