Baby shower invitation

The Sequel

A sprinkle for the second baby: wipes, diapers and clothes in the next size up.

Baby shower invitation: Sage waffle-weave card with cream blanket-stitch edging: embroidered script THE SEQUEL, a pinned cream tape reading HAND-ME-DOWN, BABY HARGROVE in slab capitals, date and venue below, pom-pom trim.

This baby shower invitation is for a sprinkle, the smaller gathering a family holds the second time around. The crib is already assembled in the corner of the nursery, the bassinet comes down from the closet shelf, and the bins of 0 to 3 month clothes are already sorted. So the afternoon is short and easy: friends arrive at the house, there is coffee and something sweet on the counter, and the gift table holds soft packages instead of boxes.

Most of what comes through the door has been used before. A cousin brings a bag of sleepers washed and folded by size. A neighbor brings the bouncer her own baby outgrew in March. Somebody brings a waffle blanket that went through a first baby and came out softer. The older sibling is there, handing things over and taking them back, and the whole thing is done in about two hours.

What to actually tell people

  • Say what you already have Put one plain line in the invitation or the group text: the crib, the car seat and the stroller are set. Name the three things that actually ran out, usually diapers in the next size, wipes and bottle nipples.
  • Set a pass-along table by the door A folding table with open bins labeled by size takes the handed-down clothes as people arrive, no wrapping needed. Keep one empty bin for anything you are ready to pass on yourself.
  • Ask for things washed, not new Tell guests outright that gently used is the point, and that clean and complete matters more than new. A note on what you cannot take secondhand, car seats and crib mattresses, saves someone an awkward moment.
  • Give the first child a job Hand the older sibling the safety pins and name tapes, or the task of carrying each gift to the table. It keeps them busy during the part of the afternoon that is entirely about the new baby.
