Guests come in out of the heat, find a seat, and tea goes round while the sandwiches are cut into small triangles. There are pears in a shallow bowl, pears poached in the kitchen, and a pear tart under a cloth on the sideboard.

The gifts stack at one end of the room and get opened slowly, with someone writing down who brought what so the thank-you notes are easy later. The parents-to-be stay seated. The pot is refilled, the plates go round a second time, and the afternoon ends with everyone carrying a pear home in a paper bag.

What to actually tell people

  • Build the menu around the fruit Pear and brie on brown bread, pears poached in white wine, a pear tart, and chilled pear nectar for anyone not drinking. Slice the fresh pears in the last twenty minutes, because cut pears brown quickly on the plate.
  • Set the table in green and gold A dark green cloth, cream napkins, gold flatware, and a row of whole pears down the middle instead of a tall arrangement. Keeping the center low means guests can see each other across the table while they talk.
  • Plan the tea in two pots One pot of strong black tea and one of caffeine-free rooibos or mint, so the guest of honor has something to drink all afternoon. Boil fresh water for the second round rather than stretching the first pot.
  • Send the pears home Set a stack of small paper bags by the door and let each guest take a pear and a sprig of leaves on the way out. It clears the table, and it costs less than a favor nobody keeps.
